Many people who belong to a sports club do not claim a reimbursement of their membership fee. Sports club members are entitled to a reimbursement of their sports club membership fee from their health insurance fund. In Belgium, the reimbursement ranges from €15 to €60 per year. At YouSave, we want to help change that. That’s why we’ve put everything together in one place: how to get your sports membership reimbursed by your health insurance fund, how much you can get back and what you need to do. We also provide useful links to the reimbursement application forms.
In 2025, 21% of all people in Flanders were members of a sports club, representing 1,499,345 people. Sports federations in the Walloon and Brussels counted 813,207 members. These are both record figures. Health insurance funds support these members by reimbursing part of their sports club membership fee as an additional benefit. But not everyone claims this benefit.
Health insurance funds generally do not publish figures on the number of reimbursements. Only CM has stated that more than 1 in 10 members apply for the sports benefit. This appears to indicate that almost half of sports club members do not claim the reimbursement.
The reason why so many people do not claim the reimbursement is not always clear. The benefit may simply not be known to everyone. Or people may not be motivated to have the form completed and sent in.
This means that many sports club members are leaving amounts of between €15 and €50 per person per year unclaimed. That’s why we provide an overview below of the amounts offered by each health insurance fund and what you need to do to claim the reimbursement.
