A savings account is a bank account where you place money that you do not need immediately. In return, the bank pays you a return: interest.
Unlike a term deposit, a savings account does not have a fixed term. You can normally deposit or withdraw money at any time. However, the exact conditions may vary from one account to another.
Conditions such as a minimum or maximum deposit, fees and restrictions can be found in the savings account information sheet. For regulated savings accounts, the bank is legally required to make an “essential information sheet” available.
A regulated savings account is a savings account that meets legal requirements and offers two types of interest: the base interest rate and the loyalty premium.
The base interest rate applies to the amounts you deposit into the account and is acquired no later than from the day after the deposit. The loyalty premium is earned on amounts that remain in the savings account uninterrupted for 12 months. The loyalty premium rate is fixed at the time of the deposit for the following 12 months.
The bank can change the base interest rate at any time. The loyalty premium is fixed for a period of 12 months for a particular deposit. If you plan to leave your money in a savings account for a short period, it is best to focus mainly on the base interest rate. If you plan to leave your money for at least 1 year, the loyalty premium is more important.
A non-regulated savings account does not meet the legal requirements that apply to regulated savings accounts. It offers only a base interest rate and no loyalty premium.
The absence of a loyalty premium does not automatically mean that a non-regulated savings account is less attractive. Its interest rate may be higher than that of regulated accounts, making it important to also consider taxation and the net return. When comparing accounts, always look at what you ultimately keep after tax.
For a regulated savings account, interest is tax-exempt up to a certain amount. In 2026, interest is exempt up to €1,020 per person per year. You pay 15% withholding tax on the amount above this exemption. For married couples and legally cohabiting partners, the exemption amounts to per year. Keep in mind that this exemption does not apply per account, but to all regulated savings accounts held by the same person.

For a non-regulated savings account, this exemption does not apply. Interest is subject to 30% withholding tax from the first euro.
Since 15 January 2024, every regulated savings account has been classified into one of three categories: A, B or C.
A category A account is a classic regulated savings account, without specific conditions linked to the base interest rate or loyalty premium.
Category B accounts are subject to conditions, such as a minimum and/or maximum deposit, or a limit on the amount you can deposit into the account each month,... .
Category C accounts are reserved for specific age categories. In practice, these are usually “youth savings accounts”.
The purpose of these categories is to make it easier to compare different regulated savings accounts. In particular for category B, it is important to carefully review the conditions.
Choosing the best savings account mainly depends on the period for which you want to leave your money in the account.
If you want to place your money in a savings account for a short period and may need it again within 12 months, it is best to look for a higher base interest rate. After all, you do not receive a loyalty premium on amounts that do not remain in the account for a full 12 months.
If you want to leave your money for more than 12 months, the loyalty premium becomes more important, even when the base interest rate is slightly lower.
On YouSave.be, you can compare savings accounts based on the base interest rate, loyalty premium and conditions to see which account best matches your plans.
A savings account is covered by the deposit guarantee scheme. In Belgium, protected deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 per person and per bank. This limit applies to the total of all protected funds held with the same bank, not to each individual account. Among others, funds held in current accounts, savings accounts, term deposits and cash certificates are covered by the protection scheme.
If you have more than €100,000 in savings, it is best to spread your savings across several banks.
Yes. When a bank is authorised in another member state of the European Economic Area (EEA) and operates in Belgium under a European passport, the protection is in principle provided by the guarantee scheme of the country where the bank is authorised. This protection also amounts to €100,000 per person and per institution.
It is important to check where a bank is incorporated and which guarantee scheme applies. A foreign bank operating in Belgium is not necessarily covered by the Belgian Guarantee Fund.
Unlike other savings products such as term deposits, bonds or cash certificates, a savings account does not have a fixed term. You can deposit money into, withdraw money from or transfer money from your account at any time.
However, keep in mind that a withdrawal can affect your loyalty premium. If you withdraw money before the full 12-month period has elapsed, you may lose the loyalty premium on that amount. For those who regularly deposit and withdraw money, it is therefore important to look not only at the interest rate, but also at the conditions and timing.
A monthly savings account is a regulated savings account (category B) into which you can only deposit a limited amount each month. The maximum monthly deposit for such accounts is typically €500.
Because the amounts you can build up are limited, some monthly savings accounts offer a relatively high interest rate compared with classic savings accounts.
A monthly savings account can be interesting when you want to save a limited amount regularly and do not want to place a large amount into a savings account immediately.
