Sports and physical activity are increasingly encouraged by Belgian health insurance funds. All health insurers in our advantages comparison tool currently offer sports benefits. A quick summary of the sport benefit advantages on offer.
A broader approach to sports and health
What used to be a reimbursement for gym or sportsclub memberships only, has evolved into a broader reimbursement package that can include sports activities, events, and preventive medical sports related check-ups.
Across Belgium, health insurers now combine multiple types of benefits:
- reimbursement for sports clubs, fitness clubs, or sports classes
- contributions for sports events (e.g. running races)
- coverage of sports medical check-ups or heart screenings
- additional preventive health benefits
For a sporty family, the sports benefits can represent a significant boost to the family budget.
Up to €470 for a typical family
For a typical household with two adults and two children, the total reimbursement can vary widely. The most generous health insurance fund when it comes to a sports benefit is Mutalité Socialiste de Luxembourg (MSLUX), which reimburses sports club membership for up to €50 per year. In addition, for those aged 18 and over, it provides up to €30 per year for participation in a sports event. Under 18’s are reimbursed for sports events up to 3 times €35 per year per person. In total, this amounts to max. 470 euros per year for a sporty family of 2 adults and 2 kids.
Big differences between health insurers
Other health insurance funds also offer significant sports benefits. VNZ (Vlaams Neutraal Ziekenfonds) and Helan offer €400 for the same typical family, Partenamut can provide up to €380, whereas La Mutualité Neutre and La Mutualité Chrétienne offer up to €320 and €300 respectively for the same situation. Several health insurers provide more limited benefits, ranging from around €40 to €200 for our family.
